May 2016

I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been thinking about where my next adventure might take me. Maybe it’s the increase in the amount of sunlight per day, or the hope of warmth, but the approach summer has begun to reignite my wanderlust.

I’m hoping this month’s prompt may stir that sense of daring in you, or alternatively, help you work through something that is weighing you down, especially as spring is shaking off the last of winter’s chill. (Well, if you’re in the north of England, the chill is still there.)

Make a list of things you’ll never do or will never do again. Make a list of people who are no longer in your life, whether you want it that way or not. Now combine an item from each of the lists into a story. It can be autobiographical or completely made up, but make sure to change any names.

Writing, I find, can help me work through difficulties, confusion, and even loss like nothing else. On the page you can have the last word, say what you meant to say, or mourn something you may not have been able to at the time, or even thought you would miss. You can explore the new path as well — take the thing you never thought you could do, and imagine the way you can get there. Visualize something that scares you, and how it may not be as frightening as it seems.
