10 December is Human Rights Day, celebrated annually to honour the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. But in many places, we take for granted some of these rights — such as access to education or ability to travel — as well as rights that are not covered by proclamations like the UDHR, such as net neutrality.
Write a piece about a society in which a right we take for granted (whether moral or legal) is not recognised.
Is it something small, that simply changes an everyday thing we do, or is it a significant right? Will you focus on a character beginning to realise the need for legal acknowledgement or action? Is it a normal day, or does something happen that sways a character’s mind? Play with the idea that your characters may not know what life would be like if they’d always had this right.
